Abstract
L’enquete sur le climat a la fin du Moyen Âge, pendant ce que les historiens appellent le « petit âge glaciaire » (PAG) est demeuree jusqu’ici presqu’inexistante pour l’ouest de la France par manque de donnees exploitables. Le present article essaie de combler ce deficit en utilisant la « Chronique » du notaire lavallois Guillaume Le Doyen. Ce texte en vers de pietre qualite relate les evenements locaux entre 1481 et 1537 et, comme souvent a l’epoque, il retient quantite de notations meteorologiques qui peuvent permettre d’etudier le climat de l’Ouest pendant presque 60 ans. Une fois etabli le degre de fiabilite des notations et en considerant que Le Doyen nous livre avant tout le climat vecu, l’etude devient possible. L’hiver est bien repere comme le printemps et l'ete. L’etude de la variabilite aboutit a constater a cette epoque une remission dans le petit âge glaciaire, les periodes froides n’etant pas dominantes. L’etude se termine par l’examen des inondations a Laval auxquelles l’auteur est evidemment sensible. La chronique permet une approche du climat tempere de l’Ouest, sensiblement nuance par rapport a ce qui est observe a Paris, mais il faudrait pouvoir etendre l’enquete a d’autres sources pour confirmer cela.
