Abstract
Une très forte prévalence de la consommation de psychotropes (en particulier de benzodiazépines) chez les personnes âgées, et qui se maintient sur le long terme en dépit d’indications thérapeutiques et de recommandations cliniques contraires, caractérise à la fois la France et le Québec. L’objet du présent article est de mettre en relief un certain nombre de points convergents dans l’appréhension du phénomène dans les deux sociétés. Au-delà des études épidémiologiques, fort utiles pour cerner l’ampleur du phénomène en France et au Québec et cadrer certains éléments de la problématique, il apparaît pertinent et prometteur de poursuivre en parallèle l’analyse des attitudes et des représentations qui soutiennent le recours aux psychotropes chez les personnes âgées de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique. La perspective comparative permet ici de penser le phénomène de ce recours au-delà des contingences administratives, politiques, organisationnelles et médicales propres à chaque système de santé et dans lesquelles il est habituellement pensé. La convergence des constats entre les recherches conduites en parallèle en France et au Québec se renforcent et permettent d’envisager éventuellement ce recours important et chronique comme une caractéristique de nos sociétés modernes contemporaines.
