\n Selon les modèles linguistiques et psycholinguistiques, le langage est sous-tendu par un lexique mental et une grammaire mentale. Le lexique peut être conceptualisé comme une mémoire à long terme dans laquelle sont encodés tous les mots acquis par un individu, alors que la grammaire mentale est plutôt responsable de la production de formes verbales régulières par l'application de règles linguistiques. Dans une tentative de réconcilier le langage avec les autres fonctions cognitives, Ullman et ses collaborateurs (Ullman, 2001, 2004; Ullman & Corkin, 1997; Ullman & Pierpont, 2005) ont récemment proposé le modèle déclaratif/procédural (MDP) selon lequel, la mémoire déclarative (i.e., mémoire à long terme responsable de l'apprentissage, du stockage et de la récupération d'informations relatives aux faits, aux concepts et aux événements personnels) sous-tend également le lexique mental alors que la mémoire procédurale (i.e., mémoire à long terme responsable de l'apprentissage et du contrôle des habiletés sensori-motrices et cognitives) sous-tend les opérations en cause dans la grammaire mentale. Cette interrelation entre le langage et la mémoire à long terme est brièvement illustrée par une étude de cas unique d'un patient présentant un déficit limité à l'application de règles spécifiques dans les domaines de la morphologie, de la syntaxe et du calcul arithmétique en raison d'une atteinte de la mémoire procédurale.\n
