" Hôtel Verbano ", une genèse à rebours, ou la stylistique comparée revisitée — L'auteure traite de l'utilité de la distinction entre styles collectif et individuel pour rendre compte de la traduction littéraire, où le sens est intégré à la forme. La saisie du sens se faisant à partir de l'étude de la structuration du style d'un auteur — lui même construit en fonction d'un style collectif qui possède ses propres normes —, la traduction doit respecter le contrat qui lie un écrivain à sa langue, jusque dans sa subversion. Toutefois, les ressources de la langue cible étant autres, une restructuration ne peut être évitée, ce qui oblige le traducteur à repenser la délimitation des frontières entre styles collectifs et individuels dans sa langue et les choix qu'elle implique. Bien que l'approche de la traduction proposée ici semble accorder un grand rôle au signifiant, elle sous-tend en fait une approche interprétative, qui se concentre sur le signifié tel qu'il est dévoilé par le jeu des signifiants. Suit une analyse de la nouvelle Hotel Verbano, de Jane Urquhart, qui montre que la progressive dépersonnalisation du récit se reflète dans sa syntaxe même, en particulier dans l'usage des modes et des temps; d'où la nécessité de retracer les frontières entre lesquelles Urquhart navigue dans sa langue, afin d'inscrire ce parcours dans le texte français.
