Cette contribution vise à explorer l’imaginaire qui entoure la traduction automatique (TA), notamment en ce qui concerne la recherche fondamentale et ses applications. Il s’agit de retracer les étapes importantes de l’histoire de la traduction automatique pour mettre en lumière certaines des attentes alimentées par l’imaginaire technologique et, en retour, montrer comment ces attentes ont teinté à la fois les directions qu’a emprunté la recherche, les applications qui en sont nées et l’accueil qu’on leur a réservées. Une fois ces tensions esquissées, nous proposons un recadrage de cet imaginaire, lequel pourrait s’incarner dans la figure du cyborg.
