"L’article propose des éléments de problématique pour évaluer le potentiel de l’économie sociale. Dans cette perspective, l’auteur s’appuie sur deux revues de littérature: l’une plutôt théorique; l’autre plutôt empirique. Selon les études théoriques, l’économie sociale apparaît innovante par défi nition (ce qui est le cas des auteurs relevant des sciences sociales ou de l’économie politique) alors que les économistes du main stream concluent au contraire qu’elle est par défi nition non innovante. Selon les études fondées sur une recherche empirique, qui sont plus nuancées, l’économie sociale se révèle généralement innovante, mais son potentiel est plus ou moins réalisé en raison soit d’un environnement défavorable, soit encore d’une institutionnalisation favorisant l’imitation plutôt que l’innovation. Les recherches empiriques montrent également que les organisations de l’économie sociale réussissent bien dans le domaine des innovations incrémentielles, en raison d’une gouvernance généralement attentive aux parties prenantes et à leur environnement immédiat. Enfi n, les innovations radicales apparaissent plus souvent à l’occasion des grandes crises de sorte qu’elles peuvent ainsi contribuer à des transformations sociales comme on a pu l’observer dans plusieurs pays occidentaux avec une reconfi guration de l’État providence dans le sens d’un Welfare pluralism ou Welfare Mix. Sous cet angle, on peut se demander si la crise actuelle n’appelle pas une nouvelle série d’innovations qui pourraient favoriser la transition vers un développement durable."
