Sur les liens qui unissent la télévision à la réalité deux grandes conceptions s’affrontent : les partisans de la « transparence », qui affirment qu’elle est une fenêtre sur le monde ; les « constructivistes », qui ne voient dans la représentation du réel qu’une construction, en accord avec les avancées de la physique moderne. Plutôt que d’entrer dans ce débat sans fin, qui évoque les « antinomies » kantiennes, cet article préfère s’interroger sur les idées de la réalité que présupposent les différents genres de l’information. Quel type de lien du document à la réalité, le journaliste ou la chaîne promettent -ils quand ils proposent un reportage, un direct, une caméra cachée, etc. ? Cet article envisage les « promesses pragmatiques » suivantes : la restitution , la reconstitution , l’ invention . La pire des erreurs épistémologiques s’agissant de la réalité est de vouloir imposer sa définition a priori et d’aller chercher dans les programmes ce qu’on y avait mis. Comprendre ce que signifie la réalité pour la télévision, c’est tenter de déceler quelle vision de la réalité recèlent ces différents genres qui prétendent y faire référence.
