Après avoir établi sur le plan théorique qu’il y avait tout lieu de croire à l’existence d’une « relation fonctionnelle » entre l’utilisation des opérations formelles et le degré de complexité intégrative de la structure conceptuelle, nous avons voulu vérifier de façon expérimentale le degré de corrélation qui existait effectivement entre ces deux variables. Les résultats de cette étude tendent à confirmer l’existence d’une telle relation. Il semble, en effet, qu’un niveau de complexité conceptuelle élevé nécessite un niveau de fonctionnement opératoire formel mais que, par contre, le fait d’avoir acquis les opérations formelles n’entraîne pas automatiquement un haut niveau de complexité dans tous les domaines de la connaissance. Ce qui veut dire que bien qu’un groupe d’élèves ait atteint le stade de la pensée formelle, il se peut que, dans une discipline donnée, un bon nombre ne soit pas en mesure de raisonner logiquement à partir d’énoncés verbaux.
