Abstract
Cet article s’intéresse à la qualité d’emploi des travailleurs indépendants qualifiés, à partir du cas des traducteurs québécois, un groupe fortement scolarisé et professionnalisé, dont les membres travaillent en grande majorité pour des clients entreprises. La qualité d’emploi est définie par quatre dimensions : l’autonomie professionnelle et le contrôle sur les modalités contractuelles, la rémunération, la protection contre les risques économiques (sous-emploi) et la protection contre les risques sociaux et professionnels (maladie, vieillesse, désuétude des connaissances). Les résultats révèlent que la qualité des emplois des traducteurs indépendants varie selon les dimensions étudiées et, à l’intérieur de chacune des dimensions, entre les professionnels. Cette diversité s’explique au premier chef par la structuration, historiquement située, du marché du travail par différents types de clients, par les caractéristiques des produits issus de l’activité de travail et par le cadre institutionnel de régulation du travail et de la protection sociale, les variables du capital humain et celles du lieu social jouant quant à elles un rôle marginal.
