La traduction du vernaculaire noir : l'exemple de Zora Neale Hurston — La traduction du vernaculaire noir exige du traducteur une grande part de créativité. Le cas de la romancière et anthropologue Zora Neale Hurston en fournit un bon exemple. Capturant avec le même bonheur le rythme traînant des dialectes du Sud et le feu d'artifice verbal des marlous newyorkais, l'accent des fermiers du Delta ou des ouvriers itinérants, elle restitue une langue et une culture forgées par une vision tantôt folklorique tantôt biblique du monde qui permettait aux Noirs d'affirmer de manière codée leur résistance à l'oppression blanche. Ses oeuvres sont narrées dans un anglais classique, seuls les dialogues sont transcrits phonétiquement. Du point de vue du traducteur, l'auteur utilise non pas une langue « correcte » et un anglais dialectal mais deux langues différentes qu'elle place sur pied d'égalité : le texte classique mais nourri des traditions langagières noires de la narration, et le « parler noir » des dialogues qui situe chaque protagoniste en fonction de ses appartenances sociales et régionales. Le traducteur doit pouvoir reconnaître les subtiles techniques stylistiques de la narration afin d'en trouver l'équivalent en français. Et pour pouvoir rendre la langue traînaillante des dialogues, langue qui invente sa propre grammaire, joue des redondances et des métaphores, mêle argot et termes savants, survivances des langues africaines et anglais élizabethain, il doit « inventer » une langue qui permette de rendre visuellement le rythme, les accents et les inventions verbales du Black English.
