This article describes a method for estimating the impact of the Canada-U.S. border on international travel by American residents to Canada in terms of the “distance equivalence” of the border. On average, the border is equivalent to an additional 1,650 km of travel. State variations are noted, and a possible correlate of these variations is identified.
