ABSTRACT This article presents the design of a dual‐band microstrip patch antenna. The proposed patch antenna is based on a novel metamaterial structure named the corrugated slotted‐complementary split‐ring resonators. By loading this new inclusion on the ground plane of a conventional patch antenna, a second resonance frequency can be created. The corrugated slotted split‐ring resonator has a minor effect on the first operating band which is generated by the patch. A prototype of this antenna has been designed for operation on the industrial‐scientific‐medical band (2.4 GHz) and the WLAN band (5.8 GHz). The prototype has been fabricated and measured, achieving good performances for both resonance frequencies.
