Abstract
Cet article présente un certain nombre de " théories " littéraires qui accordent à l'éthique une place centrale. Dans le courant déconstructiviste, particulièrement actif aux États-Unis, la position de Hillis Miller est critiquée pour sa conception réductrice et abstraite de l'éthique, destinée à sauvegarder les textes littéraires contre l'emprise d'une critique américaine ultra-politisée. Dans l'approche de Shoshana Felman, elle aussi tributaire de la déconstruction, éthique et politique se rejoignent lorsqu'elle cherche à dégager dans le discours littéraire (ou quotidien) l'empreinte de l'Histoire, individuelle et collective. Nussbaum et Booth sont étudiés comme représentants d'une critique existentielle, qui cherche dans la lecture la rencontre avec l'ethos du texte ; pour Nussbaum, la grande littérature illumine notre condition humaine, et nous apprend différentes manières de mener " une bonne vie ". Ricœur, enfin, formule une herméneutique où l'éthique intervient comme objet d'étude, dans l'analyse rigoureuse de la mimésis textuelle, puis, de manière plus subjective, dans l'appropriation du texte par le lecteur/critique. Dans ses divers avatars, la critique éthique approche la littérature comme expression d'un ethos ou comme mise en forme d'une vision du monde, qui offre au lecteur le moyen d'enrichir et d'approfondir sa propre réflexion sur les questions fondamentales de l'existence, sans pour autant lui apporter des réponses - ce qui serait le propre d'une critique morale.
