Abstract Cet article examine la politique extérieure du Canada à l'égard du système interaméricain. S'inspirant de l'approche constructiviste, l'analyse explique comment l'identité hémisphérique du pays s'est progressivement transformée. La première section s'appuie sur une démarche historique pour donner une vue d'ensemble des relations entre le Canada et les Amériques au cours du 20ème siècle. La seconde partie montre ensuite comment, depuis l'adhésion du Canada à l'Organisation des États américains en 1990, la politique régionale du pays s'est surtout concentrée sur deux enjeux: la promotion de la démocratie et la libéralisation du commerce. Il ressort de notre étude que, malgré l'activisme dont le gouvernement a cherché à faire preuve au cours des années récentes, la politique du Canada face aux Amériques demeure confrontée à de persistantes interrogations. This article examines Canada's foreign policy as related to the interamerican system. Based upon a constructivist approach, this analysis explains how the country's hemispheric identity has gradually evolved over time. The first part uses a history‐based approach to present an overview of Canada's relations with the Americas throughout the 20th century. The second part then demonstrates how, since Canada's accession to the Organization of American States in 1990, two major challenges have been the focus of this country's regional policy: promoting democracy and liberalizing trade. This study reveals that, despite the government's attempted activism in recent years, Canada's policy vis‐à‐vis the Americas remains fraught with unanswered questions.
