Abstract
Dans l'œeuvre de Gabrielle Roy, le dépaysement est un thème omniprésent et multiforme. Au sens littéral, le dépaysement résulte d'un changement de lieu. Pour le personnage royen, ce déplacement comprend tous les voyages, tels que l'émigration au Canada des Yaranlko et de Sam Lee Wong, le voyage en France de Pierre Cadorai, le «congé» habituel de Luzina Tousignant de la Petite Poule d'Eau et le déménagenlent annuel de la famille Lacasse dans Saint-Henri. Il est normal que l'immigrant d'un pays lointain éprouve un sentiment d'aliénation. Souvent, ce dépaysement moral est accompagné d'un sentinlent d'exclusion, de dépayselnent social, du fait qu'on est autre, qu'on est étranger. L'immigrant n'est pas, cependant, le seul à éprouver ce dépaysement moral et social. Bien qu'ils soient habitants originaires du pays, certains personnages royens comme Alexandre Chenevert, en raison du rapport turbulent qu'ils ont avec leur milieu, se trouvent hors de place et aliénés. Comme Stendhal l'avait déjà bien reconnu, l'être humain peut se sentir encore plus dépaysé dans son propre pays que celui qui ne l'habite plus: « L'étranger, explique-t-il dans ses Pages d'Italie, n'est pas celui que sépare de nous le hasard d'une rivière ou d'une montagne. Mais celui dont les principes, les vœux et les sentiments sont en guerre avec vos principes, vos vœux et vos sentiments. » Chez Gabrielle Roy, une absence d'identification avec son milieu est le propre du dépaysé, qu'il soit ou non du pays.
