Frontiers of Population Biology is a collection of essays from presentations at the 1995 centenary celebration of the birth of A. J. Nicholson. The authors comprise a relatively international group, with 32 from Australia, 17 from the United Kingdom, 8 from the United States, and 12 from seven additional countries. Following two commemorative papers on the life, contributions, and philosophies of Professor Nicholson, the essays are arranged in Þe sections: Theory of Population Regulation (13 chapters), Two Species Interactions (10 Chapters), Spatial Processes (6 Chapters), Population, Evolution and Molecular Ecology (5 Chapters), and Population Management (8 Chapters). Each section is preceded by a 2Ð page Introduction and Overview. The first section deals largely with the issue, and means of detecting and evaluating, density-dependence. This seems Þting given the thrust of Nicholson’s work. Additional chapters deal with interactions between populations, and with multiple component interactions. The second section provides a good range of twospecies interactions. In addition to the predator-prey and host-parasitoid relationships that usually dominate theoretical treatments of interspeciÞ interactions, there are additional essays on mutualisms, disease, herbivory and indirect effects. This diversity of topics selection has a positive and broadening effect.
