The imminent replacement of the remaining NASA Space Shuttles and the recent retirement of the Concorde supersonic transport have left a large gap in the high-speed transportation industry. Similarly, even today’s best commercial airliners continue to grid-lock passengers at travel speeds which haven’t changed in over 40 years. It is time to start pushing those boundaries. Studies have been conducted on this type of technology for years but nothing has yet been developed. A multi-faceted, reusable hypersonic vehicle with an integrated pulse detonation engine could provide the solution. This vehicle could serve the future needs of space and research industries, while simultaneously providing a significant increase in the pace of business and commercial transport. While there are many obstacles which still remain, one of the largest that must be addressed is the versatile, adaptable propulsion system that would allow such a vehicle to be used both for commercial transport on earth, as well as for space travel. Once such challenges have been met, the proposed aircraft could very well provide a viable solution to society’s growing aerospace needs. Now is the time for such a breakthrough to expand our horizons and propel us boldly into a new era of flight.
