The Canadian SEG held its annual DoodleTrain Continuing Education Week in early November 2004. This third DoodleTrain was, by all accounts, more successful than its predecessors. Doodle Train came about in the spring and summer of 2002 when Bill Nickerson and other members of CSEG's CE committee started thinking about the education needs of the Canadian community and about some problems that had been occurring. Courses associated with the spring annual meeting were routinely cancelled due to lack of registration. As a result, Nickerson et al. conjectured (and were backed up by surveys) that senior geophysicists, the demographic bulk of CSEG membership, just weren't able to commit the 4–5 days required for a short-course and the annual meeting. It was also very common for other industry courses to be cancelled at other times due to poor registration. They also noted that spring and winter were busy times for CSEG and its members.
