Abstract
À travers l’histoire de l’éducation française dans les anciennes colonies en Afrique comme le Togo, le signal a représenté un phénomène symbolique dans l’enseignement. Alors, quelle symbolique afficha le signal dans le système français d’éducation ? Concrètement, il symbolisa un objet, à l’exemple de la carapace d’escargot, de coquillage, d’un petit os d’animal ou d’une médaille à l’effigie d’un personnage important dans l’histoire du monde, qu’on accrochait au cou de l’élève qui a manqué de s’exprimer en français comme langue officielle. Le signal passait alors de main en main à titre punitif pour sanctionner l’élève qui a parlé en Évé dans l’enceinte de l’école. Donc, l’instauration du signal au Sud du Togo, dans les établissements scolaires, eut pour but d’obliger les élèves Évé à s’exprimer uniquement en français. Et le but ultime était de lutter contre l’allemand la première langue du colonisateur, contre l’anglais taxé d’intrusion et la langue maternelle l’Évé. Ainsi, dans ce champ de lutte polyglossique en pays Évé, le signal servit de rempart pour le français face aux autres langues, pour s’imposer efficacement à l’école, dans l’administration, dans la sphère économique et servit d’outil régulateur et d’intégrateur social.
