Los tres ensayos que componen este libro tienen en comun el examinar, a partir de casos concretos, el significado profundo de conceptos como autonomia, soberania e independencia. Estos conceptos son muy tergiversados e instrumentalizados en los debates politicos actuales, tanto en Europa (referendum en Escocia, consulta en Cataluna) como en America: el caso de Quebec y la compleja problematica de las autonomias indigenas, desde Argentina hasta Canada. Los autores estudian situaciones del Sur invirtiendo, en palabras de Aparicio, «el sentido del flujo hegemonico de conocimientos y aprendizajes » (p. 9). Los capitulos del propio Aparicio y de Breton y Martinez Mauri profundizan en el tema de las relaciones de los pueblos indigenas con estados nacion, mientras que el texto de Marti i Puig analiza el caso singular de Puerto Rico, casi un estado naciones, «asociado» desde hace medio siglo al pais que ejerce la hegemonia en el continente, Estados Unidos.
