Abstract
L'interpretation est une notion nee dans le domaine du parc naturel des Etats-Unis au debut du 20e siecle. Au depart, il s'agissait d'une technique concernant l'explication de la richesse naturelle pour le public. Freenman Tilden est considere comme le fondateur de l'interpretation, avec son livre Interpreting our heritage (1957). Cette pratique-notion s'introduit en France, passant par le Quebec, dans les annees 1980. En France, l'interpretation se donne, des le depart, comme un outil qui permet d'ameliorer la forme et le fond des institutions culturelles, notamment le musee et le monument historique. L'apport de l'interpretation pourrait se resumer en deux axes. D'abord, la notion d'interpretation a rendu possible l'apparition d'un nouveau type de musee : musee sans collection ou le focus est donne au message, au lieu de la collection. Ce message est presente sous diverses formes, en s'appuyant sur divers dispositifs. Ensuite, dans un contexte general ou, depuis les annees 80, le public prend une place de plus en plus importante, les activites pedagogiques pour le public se developpe activement dans la plupart des institutions culturelles de la France. Le programme pedagogique cherche a atteindre deux objectifs un peu differents : soit, il vise a democratiser l'acces a la culture, soit, il tente de remplir le ro?le social que certains acteurs culturels veulent y voir, notamment dans les musees. Dans les deux cas, l'interpretation joue un ro?le primordial tant au niveau de la conception du projet pedagogique qu'au niveau de la realisation du programme. Actuellement en France, la notion d'interpretation cesse d'e?tre un concept servant seulement a la conception et la production d'un projet culturel pour le public. Certains chercheurs, surtout dans le domaine linguistique ou semiotique, essaie d'exploiter la notion d'interpretation pour analyser differentes formes de messages adresses au public, la publicite par exemple.
