Abstract
L’article retrace les heurs et malheurs de la traduction française des œuvres complètes de Mussolini, proposée dans la seconde moitié des années trente par Flammarion. Grâce aux archives de cette maison d’édition, qui nous renseignent, entre autres choses, sur les termes du contrat avec l’éditeur italien et avec l’auteur, sur le nombre de copies vendues d’année en année, en passant par le choix « mussolinien » de la traductrice, il est possible de saisir les enjeux non seulement commerciaux, mais aussi politiques et diplomatiques d’une telle initiative éditoriale. Celle-ci naît dans le contexte favorable d’un rapprochement franco-italien que sanctionnent les accords signés par Mussolini et Laval en janvier 1935, mais subit ensuite directement le revers d’un refroidissement croissant dans les relations entre les deux pays.
