Abstract To perform multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging, a coil with a high signal‐to‐noise ratio and spatially uniform B 1 field that covers the same volume of interest at several frequencies is preferred. The design of a surface coil that reduces contaminating signals from the surface‐lying tissues and improves uniformity of the B 1 field within the same preselected volume for both 31 P and 1 H is described. Testing of the coil demonstrated acquisition of proton images and 31 P spectra from a selected voxel in rat liver at 7 T. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
