À l'heure où les effets du réchauffement climatique commencent à être perçus via la fonte des glaces et la désertification de nombreuses régions du globe, il devient urgent de s'équiper de technologies permettant aux scientifiques de mener des études basées sur des données réelles et sur de longues séquences temporelles. Ce besoin a contribué au développement massif d'observatoires très hétérogènes par leurs fonctionnalités tel que Netpune au Canada, Bonne Bay Observatory ou encore le projet IOOS (Integrated Ocean Observing System). Dans ce contexte de recherche scientifique, la technologie doit répondre à des besoins concrets d'études de notre environnement. Ces besoins peuvent se décrire en termes de fonctionnalités répondant aux objectifs métiers des utilisateurs de notre système. Dans le cadre de l'étude de notre environnement, les scientifiques ont besoin de faire l'acquisition de grandes quantités de données. Celles-ci peuvent alors faire l'objet de traitements immédiats ou pouvoir être réutilisées pour répondre à des études connexes suite à la détection ou la compréhension de nouveaux phénomènes. Une des problématiques est donc de doter les observatoires de l'intelligence leur permettant de répondre aux besoins scientifiques actuels et futurs. Pour cela, différents problèmes se doivent d'être résolus et l'on doit bien prendre en compte les environnements considérés.
