Abstract
A imigração portuguesa para os EUA iniciou-se através das rotas baleeiras do século XIX, maioritariamente originária dos arquipélagos atlânticos dos Açores e de Cabo-Verde, e foi-se fixando em três regiões costeiras do país: no Nordeste, com uma maior expressão nos estados de Massachusetts e Rhode Island, na Califórnia e no Havai.A extensa colectânea agora publicada pelo Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture da University of Massachusetts, em Dartmouth, situada a sul de Massachusetts, no coração do "arquipélago português", reúne um conjunto de estudos sobre Portuguese-Americans and other related communities nesta região e em Newark (Nova Jérsia), com algumas discretas incursões comparativas com outros destinos imigratórios, como sejam o Canadá (Bloemraad) ou a Alemanha (Klimt).As suas organizadoras, professoras na University of Massachusetts, em Dartmouth (Andrea Klimt), e na Rutgers University, em Newark (Kimberly DaCosta Holton), têm uma longa experiência de investigação e de ensino sobre esta "diáspora", com a qual convivem no seu quotidiano profissional.Analisar a história, a cultura e as dinâmicas sociais dos Portuguese-Americans e outras comunidades com eles interconectadas (p.22), avançar na compreensão da "migração transnacional e subsequente processo de identidade e formação de comunidade entre imigrantes e seus descendentes" (ibidem) são os objectivos genéricos desta obra.Com enquadramentos disciplinares próximos -desde a sociologia e a antropologia, até à ciência política e aos estudos culturais -os 20 capítulos que a compõem estão organizados em cinco grandes unidades temáticas: 1) citizenship, belonging and community; 2) expressive culture, media representations and identity; 3) education, social mobility and political culture; 4) work, gender and family; 5) e uma última parte que, sob o título race, post-colonialism, and diasporic contexts, reúne os capítulos que não se dedicam exclusivamente a portugueses ou seus descendentes.Trata-se de uma organização flexível que tenta dar coerência a um conjunto de textos que contrastam entre si, quer pelo momento em que foram publicados (entre 1980 e 2009), quer pelas abordagens teóricas e metodológicas distintas, quer, inclusivamente, pela sua qualidade.Neste sentido, a organização nestas cinco partes é meramente indicativa dos assuntos tratados em cada um dos capítulos, independentemente da forma como estes se complementam ou interagem entre si.Numa apreciação individualizada, por capítulo, são de sublinhar os excelentes artigos inéditos aqui publicados, que acrescentam algo de novo a uma área de estudos que, a partir dos anos de 1970, se foi definindo em torno de uma discreta,
