Abstract
Aimigracao portuguesa para os EUAiniciou-se atraves das rotas baleeiras do seculo XIX, maioritariamente originaria dos arquipelagos atlânticos dos Acores e de Cabo-Verde, e foi-se fixando em tres regioes costeiras do pais: no Nordeste, com umamaior expressao nos estados deMassachusetts e Rhode Island, na California e no Havai. A extensa colectânea agora publicada pelo Center for Portuguese Studies andCulture daUniversity ofMassachusetts, emDartmouth, situada a sul de Massachusetts, no coracao do “arquipelago portugues”, reune um conjunto de estudos sobre Portuguese-Americans and other related communities nesta regiao e emNewark (Nova Jersia), comalgumas discretas incursoes comparativas com outros destinos imigratorios, como sejam o Canada (Bloemraad) ou a Alemanha (Klimt). As suas organizadoras, professoras na University of Massachusetts, em Dartmouth (Andrea Klimt), e na Rutgers University, em Newark (Kimberly DaCosta Holton), tem uma longa experiencia de investigacao e de ensino sobre esta “diaspora”, com a qual convivem no seu quotidiano profissional. Analisar a historia, a cultura e as dinâmicas sociais dos Portuguese-Americans e outras comunidades com eles interconectadas (p. 22), avancar na compreensao da “migracao transnacional e subsequente processo de identidade e formacao de comunidade entre imigrantes e seus descendentes” (ibidem) sao os objectivos genericos desta obra. Comenquadramentos disciplinares proximos—desde a sociologia e a antropologia, ate a ciencia politica e aos estudos culturais — os 20 capitulos que a compoem estao organizados em cinco grandes unidades tematicas: 1) citizenship, belonging and community; 2) expressive culture, media representations and identity; 3) education, social mobility and political culture; 4) work, gender and family; 5) e uma ultima parte que, sob o titulo race, post-colonialism, and diasporic contexts, reune os capitulos que nao se dedicam exclusivamente a portugueses ou seus descendentes. Trata-se de uma organizacao flexivel que tenta dar coerencia a um conjunto de textos que contrastam entre si, quer pelo momento em que foram publicados (entre 1980 e 2009), quer pelas abordagens teoricas e metodologicas distintas, quer, inclusivamente, pela suaqualidade.Neste sentido, a organizacaonestas cincopartes emeramente indicativa dos assuntos tratados em cada um dos capitulos, independentemente da forma como estes se complementam ou interagem entre si.
