Depuis sa naissance en 1830, la Belgique connaît des tensions entre langue et politique. Se pose dès lors la question de la nature – linguistique ou communautaire – de ces tensions car dans ce pays elles ont en effet été qualifiées tantôt de « linguistiques » par certains tantôt de « communautaires » par d’autres. Mais le choix de ces qualificatifs ne peut être anodin car il structure les enjeux politiques. L’ambition de cet article est d’aborder cette question sous le regard croisé de la linguistique et de la science politique. Dans cette perspective, l’article offre d’abord une approche définitionnelle, généalogique et explicative des adjectifs linguistique et communautaire en Belgique avant d’explorer la pluralité des usages de ces termes dans la littérature scientifique. Dans la deuxième partie, il analyse les regards et les propos des citoyens à propos du fédéralisme belge, en recourant à l’étude respectivement de leurs représentations mentales et de leurs métaphores conceptuelles. Cette entreprise interdisciplinaire, articulant approches théorique et empirique, tente ainsi de mettre au jour l’importance du choix des mots et des métaphores utilisés pour décrire la réalité politique belge car ceux-ci ont un impact sur la façon même de penser la société plurilingue que constitue la Belgique.
