In 1997, the Confederation Bridge Ice Monitoring Program was created to monitor ice-structure behavior and to validate the pier design of the Confederation Bridge located in Eastern Canada spanning across the Northumberland Strait. Each year instrumentation collects data for the program and enables the monitoring team to analyze ice-structure interactions, determine ice loads and develop ice ridge profiles. The 2008 ice season began with temperatures much lower than expected in December and again in March; a freezing degree day index of 633 has been reported. The season was very active and recorded the program’s second highest number of events for a single season, close to 1400, and about 7% of the season’s events had loads greater than 2 MN. Extreme ice loads, in excess of 4.8 MN, containing significant keels, over 6 m depth, were recorded at pier 31 and have been briefly analyzed herein. These extreme events are limit driving force events and were part of a series of high magnitude loads that interacted with the northwest face of pier 31 on February 28th and 29th.
