OVIDIU STANCIU Jan Patočka a écrit en 1947 un petit livre, un des rares à avoir été conçus comme tel et achevés par le philosophe tchèque, qu'il laissera pourtant, comme il le dit dans une lettre à Robert Campbell, « se reposer dans un tiroir » (Patočka, « Lettres » 39).La première publication de ce texte devra attendre les années 1980, quand les disciples de Patočka l'incluront dans l'édition samizdat de ses Œuvres complètes.Pour en restituer le sens et la saisir dans toute son ampleur, il est nécessaire d'indiquer la pluralité des contextes dans lesquels cette œuvre peut être inscrite.Elle propose d'abord une interrogation sur la tradition de l'humanisme tchèque, et notamment sur un de ses avatars récents.En effet, en dépit de sa parution retardée, il s'agit d'un livre conçu comme une intervention dans l'actualité, plus précisément dans un débat qui agitait les milieux philosophiques et littéraires de la Tchécoslovaquie de l'après-guerre et qui était occasionné par la publication du livre posthume d'Emmanuel Rádl, La consolation de la philosophie.Au-delà des détails de cette controverse, de ses enjeux non seulement philosophiques mais également politiquesle livre de Rádl subit de nombreuses attaques de la part des cercles marxisants tchèques en quête de légitimité publique -, la question principale que ce débat soulève et que Patočka tente de soumettre à une réflexion conséquente concerne le rapport entre métaphysique et humanisme : tout humanisme doit-il nécessairement s'appuyer sur
