Abstract
This chapter discusses the development of the insurance industry in North America. The ‘British system’ of risk protection spread from the late eighteenth century primarily via two routes: trade with the United Kingdom and migration from the British Isles. It established itself most quickly and had greater impact in the so-called Western Off shoots such as the US, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina. It was also these countries that cultivated the most intensive relationships with the British insurance market. Although the US started with the British system, its sheer size, risk portfolio, and the early political independence of the country meant it developed in the most distinct way and in turn influenced Europe.
