Abstract
Wood packaging materials often harbours quarantinable and dangerous pests and allows their spread from one country to another. Although international standard ISPM 15 applies to wood packaging materials they are occasionally found to contain quarantinable organisms such as the pine wood nematode ( Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), and Chinese (Anoplophora chinensis) and the Asian long-horn beetle ( A. glabripennis). The introduction of such organisms could result in serious financial losses, e.g. the introduction and adaptation of the pine wood nematode into Russia is estimated to result in annual losses of 42 to 120 billion rubles. From 2007 to 2011 the pine wood nematode has been found 33 times by NPPO inspections of packaging materials by authorities in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, France, Ireland, Cyprus, Switzerland, i.e. from (incidences in parentheses) Portugal 920), the United States (60), China (6) and Mongolia (1). Here were summarize the protocols used by the Finnish Food Safety Authority EVIRA in the inspection of imported wood packaging materials where such materials have been inspected for quarantine pests since 1999. In total 3282 samples have been analyzed and B. xylophilus has been detected 49 times in wood packaging imported from the USA, Canada, Japan, Turkmenistan, China and Portugal.
