Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image sizeRésuméCet article traite de l’élite africaine et de l’opinion des activistes sur les réparations à l’Afrique par les pays occidentaux. A la fin de l’année 2003, les auteurs avaient complété cinquante-sept interviews quelque peu structurées d’intellectuels africains, d’activistes défenseurs des droits de la personne, de diplomates et de membres du Groupe de gens éminents. Ces interviews avaient été requises par l’Organisation de l’unité africaine de cette époque-là pour étudier les réparations à l’Afrique. Les personnes interrogées devaient parler de leurs sentiments personnels sur les réparations et l’”Occident”; on leur a posé des questions sur leur implication dans le mouvement en faveur des réparations. Les thèmes clés ont révélé un désir de réparations pour des évènements historiques (essentiellement l’esclavage et le colonialisme) et contemporains, une emphase toute particulière sur les réparations d’ordre pratique, allant au-delà des excuses et de l’admission (par exemple, l’aide à la santé, l’éducation et l’infrastructure), et une opinion divisée sur l’importance de réparations commémoratives comme les musées et les monuments.
