Deep draft ships passing through confined channels can significantly alter the surrounding hydrodynamic conditions. In harbour and channel design there is increasing attention being given to the navigation implications, for example, under keel clearance, due to ship interaction with the surrounding hydrodynamic conditions. However, the impact of ship induced hydrodynamics on channel stability, nearby structures and the surrounding environment is generally not addressed in detail during the channel design phase. In recent years, there has been significant advancement in the numerical tools available for investigation of ship induced hydrodynamics and the potential impacts on the wider environment. These tools are able to investigate both the long period (drawdown) and short period (wake) components generated by deep draft ships passing through confined channels. This paper presents an advanced numerical model, SGH, which is able to investigate ship induced hydrodynamics in the channel design phase of a project and presents a case study undertaken for the Burlington Shipping Channel in Canada, where design criteria for channel protection against long-wave induced scour was developed using SGH. This modelling system is able to investigate the generation and propagation of long-and-short period ship-induced waves over a complex bathymetry and water body. A theoretical example of applying a numerical model in the design of a navigation channel to minimise ship wave effects on the wider environment is also presented.
