Abstract
In the paper, the premiere of the first St Petersburg production of Giuseppe Verdi´s Falstaff at the Mariinsky Theatre that took place 17 January 1894 is reconstructed and analysed. Complex artistic approach to analysing of a performance which allows us to take Falstaff as a full scenic and music phenomenon with relation to musicology and theatre critics is provided; large documental and periodical data is used. Analysis of the first St Petersburg performance of the opera is carried out taking stage practices and theatre and historical context of the last quarter of the 19th century into account; characteristics of the actors who took part in the premiere performance and the production's details are provided, the visible structure of the production is reconstructed. Stage approaches of Russian opera theatre in the last quarter of 19th century are illustrated with Falstaff. Ways of Russian opera direction in the pre-director's theatre period in the 1890-s are shown. It is being proved that the authors of the production – stage director Osip Palechek and conductor Eduard Napravnick – were eager to reproduce the Italian version of Falstaff premiered at La Scala the year before the St Petersburg premiere at the Imperial stage as accurate as possible. The regular stage designers of the Theatre – Genrikh Levot, Petr Lambin, Mikhail Bocharov, and Ivan Andreev – reconstructed the sets for every scene of Falstaff using the sketches for the Milan production. The main function of Palachek was to locate the performers on stage and to follow the notes made by the composer and librettists. That's why the content of the production premiered in 1894 as well as its conflict reflected the conception of the first scenic version of the opera in full.
