Abstract
In the southern Levant, there is one town from the first half of the 3rd millennium whose complete plan we know: it is the town of Labwe, situated in the south eastern corner of the lava flows of the Leja, whose exceptional state of preservation is due to the construction material (basalt) and the low level of burying. A powerful rampart of a complex structure in which three monumental doors stand, each different in design, surrounds the settlement. The urban make-up is dense and continuous, constructed on a rectangular geometric framework of a panel around 4m in length, and probably planned. The blocks of houses are all adjacent to each other and the roads and passages are only the residual spaces between these blocks. Urban orientation is dictated by the direction of the ramparts. At the centre of the town, a deep depression gives access to an under-basaltic passage and to an underground tank. In the east, a separate quarter from the rest of the urban make-up, with a door in the rampart, surrounds a double monument, probably a temple. The design is fully comparable to those of the big cities of this period, such as Khirbet az-Zeraqun, ‘Ai et-Tell, Meggido, Tell el-Far'ah, Tell Yarmouth, Arad, etc. The plan of Labwe allows us now to propose more reliable reconstructions and a better understanding of the very incomplete plans of these sites.
