This cuticle reports partial resuh.s of an action research on the topic of the perceiued relationship of indiuiduals receiuing social assistance to New Bnnuwick's income assisturce progran. More specifically, the article yresents the resuhs of an analysis of the discowse of socially assisted individwls conceming their dealings with social assistance fficers, cn caseworkers as they are called. Reqiec.ting these resuks sheds light on the ouerall relanonal dynamics between assistcLnce recipients md the social assistance s)srem, a'td more tetlingty on the gap between the oq.,ert plLrpose of the progratn, i.e. reaching self.sufficiency or exiting the s)stem, and its prupose as it is perceiarcd b1 recipients , i.e. keeping them within the system, as predicated by their notion of the role of caseworkers.
