Abstract
Although HIV / AIDS is a familiar term in South Africa, it evokes a multitude of responses from different South Africans. For some it is a life-threatening disease. Others view it as divine judgment; the wrath of God released onto people who deserve it. For those who can access anti-retrovirals, there is (limited) hope; for those less fortunate, it is a death sentence that unfolds inexorably in its own time. It is viewed by some whites as a black disease; by some Africans as a murderous American invention; by many heterosexuals as a gay problem. Framing these opinions are the dire statistics : in South Africa, it is estimated that 890 people die because of AIDS or AIDS-related complications daily. South Africa's official AIDS policies have ranged from neglect under the Apartheid government, to denial and ignorance under the government of Thabo Mbeki. The former president has openly subscribed to the beliefs of so-called dissident scientists. The former health minister, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, has also been particularly vocal in her responses to the pending AIDS crisis. Under the guidance of the minister, the South African stall at the 2006 Toronto AIDS conference boasted garlic, lemons and beetroot on display for treatment against AIDS.
