Les politiques forestières provinciales du Canada reflètent la dynamique globale de transition d’un mode de gouvernance hiérarchique à une « gouvernance hétérarchique » (Pülzl et Rametsteiner, 2002) ce qui comporte, entre autres, une ouverture des espaces à la participation de nouveaux acteurs. Le secteur forestier canadien a été au cœur du développement économique national constituant un levier incontournable au développement des régions, particulièrement dans les provinces de l’Ontario et du Québec. Notre article souhaite souligner les points de convergence et de divergence entre les mécanismes de gouvernance participative institués dans chacune des provinces en ce qui a trait à la prise de décision en matière de politiques forestières. Notre analyse suggère que plusieurs similitudes modulent cette nouvelle génération de gouvernance, mais que celle-ci prend place dans des contextes institutionnels précis qui influent les formes participatives. Dans les cas étudiés deux trajectoires distinctes de gouvernance participative ont été identifiées : la territorialisation de la participation dans le cas du Québec et la reconstruction d’une gouvernance provinciale pour celui de l’Ontario. Cette différenciation permet de recadrer certains termes du débat en ce qui concerne les théories et les formes de la gouvernance participative.
