onstruire, déconstruire et reconstruire un système référentiel, voilà en substance le projet artistique de Rodney Graham, un artiste conceptuel fasciné par les histoires oubliées et les mécanismes de reprise.Cette fascination se traduit notamment par l'appropriation de récits qu'il réinscrit dans de nouveaux contextes en en complexifiant (ou en en simplifiant) cependant la structure.Cette manière de travailler, systématiquement précédée d'une vaste recherche, le conduit à revisiter des oeuvres célèbres ou négligées -le Parsifal de Richard Wagner, le Landor's Cottage d'Edgar A. Poe, le Casino Royale d'Ian Fleming ou la sculpture minimaliste de Donald Judd -, toutes lui offrant l'occasion de revisiter les origines de la modernité.Le Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal lui consacrait récemment une exposition qui incluait, pour notre plus grand plaisir, une majorité d'oeuvres récentes dont plusieurs étaient présentées pour la première fois.La majorité des œuvres exposées, en particulier les photographies et les vidéos, relève de la « re-présentation historique ironique », comme les désigne Graham, et met en scène l'artiste dans le rôle principal.Elles recèlent des références et des insinuations qui prennent parfois la forme de jeux d'esprit subtils.En ce sens, il s'agit d'une exposition exigeante qui requiert une attention soutenue et persévérante.Il est dommage que l'institution montréalaise ne s'engage pas plus souvent à présenter des oeuvres qui relèvent de cette tradition conceptuelle marquée par un humour pénétrant absolument délectable.
