This article discusses the versatility of granular activated carbon (GAC) by providing examples of the various types of water treatment plants where it is used, including: the St. Paul (Minnesota) Regional Water Services (SPRWS) lime‐softening treatment plant; the Lakeview Water Treatment Facility in the Region of Peel, Ontario, Canada's use of ozone and BAC before its ultrafiltration (UF) membranes; and, the Northern Kentucky Water District's (NKWD) use of GAC adsorbers after conventional coagulation and filtration and before UV for TOC removal, DBP control, and as a general barrier for trace organic contaminants and microconstituents.
