Metamorphic Composition in Ovid’s Treatment of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus

Abstract
This paper explores the themes of reflection and self-reflection articulated in Ovid’s account of the myth of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus in Book 4 of the Metamorphoses . In retelling this story, Ovid makes use of his own version of the myth of Narcissus, thereby claiming that it has earned its way into the canon and become worthy of allusion and imitation. Ovid’s reiteration and reconfiguration of some of the constitutive parts of the myth of Narcissus in his account of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus shed light on the character of his poetics, showing them to be both self-referential and metamorphic. Reflection and echo, repetition and doubling, in whatever configurations Ovid may present them, are not merely a game for the poetic entertainment of the author and the reader, but the structuring tropes of a fiction that invites the reader to participate in the aesthetic negotiation of Ovid’s metamorphic poetics and in the narcissistic dynamics that inform the poetic universe of the Metamorphoses . Cet article explore les thèmes de la réflexion et de l’autoréflexion exprimés dans le récit d’Ovide sur le mythe de Salmacis et Hermaphrodite au livre IV des Métamorphoses . Dans cette adaptation de l’histoire, Ovide fait usage de sa propre version du mythe de Narcisse, affirmant ainsi que ce récit a gagné sa place dans le canon et qu’il est digne d’allusion et d’imitation. La réitération et la reconfiguration par Ovide de certaines parties constitutives du mythe de Narcisse dans son récit de Salmacis et Hermaphrodite jette un éclairage sur le caractère de sa poésie, qui se révèle à la fois autoréférentielle et métamorphique. Réflexion et écho, répétition et duplication, dans quelque configuration qu'Ovide puisse les présenter, ne sont pas seulement un jeu pour l’amusement poétique de l’auteur et du lecteur, mais les tropes structurantes d’une fiction qui invite le lecteur à participer à la négociation esthétique des poétiques métamorphiques d’Ovide et à la dynamique narcissique qui façonne l’univers poétique des Métamorphoses .
