Cette étude de l'établissement de détention de Sherbrooke de 1891 à 1931, a pour but de faire un portrait précis de la population incarcérée à la prison commune du district de Saint-François. Nous cherchons à savoir si les diverses données reliées à la population carcérale évoluent au cours de la période étudiée. La clientèle carcérale sherbrookoise est, en grande partie, constituée de gens démunis, de jeunes hommes rattachés à la classe ouvrière. Les individus qui ont l'âge et la capacité de travailler constituent la plus grande partie des détenus. Les délits que les délinquants du district de Saint-François commettent sont souvent reliés à la surconsommation d'alcool. Tout ceux qui s'éloignent des normes de l'époque, celles d'un capitalisme naissant où la main-d'oeuvre se doit d'être"quiet, orderly, obedient and industrious" sont récupérés par diverses institutions telles la prison commune. La population carcérale se modifie peu avec le temps. La plupart des variables à savoir, l'âge, le sexe, l'état civil, le métier, le type de crime commis fluctuent que très légèrement au cours de la période que nous avons sélectionnée. On remarque toutefois que les données entourant la langue, la religion, le lieu de naissance et l'alphabétisation connaissent une certaine évolution. Le nombre de francophones et de catholiques augmentent progressivement à la prison de Sherbrooke. À la fin de notre période, on retrouve un peu plus de gens nés au Canada et l'alphabétisation des détenus s'est améliorée.
