Las Inteligencias Múltiples de Gardner. ¿Descubrimiento del Siglo o Simple Rectitud Política?

A la pregunta ¿la inteligencia es única o múltiple?, Gardner contesta sin dudar: es múltiple. Pero él no es el primero en defender la naturaleza plural de la inteligencia; algunos autores defensores del enfoque factorial propusieron una concepción jerárquica de la inteligencia. La publicación de Frames of Mind (i.e., Estructuras de la Mente), en 1983, reactivó el debate, pero esta vez con la teoría de las inteligencias múltiples (IM). Este texto consta de tres partes. En la primera se exponen brevemente los principios de la teoría de Gardner, los criterios que determinan la existencia de inteligencia y los tipos de inteligencia. Posteriormente, se presentan nueve críticas susceptibles de aplicarse a la teoría de Gardner: Los problemas de la definición de inteligencia del autor; asimismo, se cuestiona si se trata en rigor de una teoría científica y si ésta es realmente nueva. Se muestra que los ocho criterios utilizados en las IM son arbitrarios y que la posición del autor sobre la independencia de las inteligencias es ambigua. Por otra parte, se cuestiona el supuesto según el cual las nueve inteligencias tienen de verdad el mismo estatuto y el por qué de la ausencia de los resultados de los enfoques factoriales. Además se nota que la teoría de las IM no toma en cuenta las comparaciones entre mujeres y hombres ni entre grupos etnoculturales. Por último, se observa que la medición de las IM ha sido un fracaso. En una última parte, se plantean algunas razones del éxito de esta teoría. Se observa que el modelo de Gardner ha tenido un gran auge en el ambiente educativo a pesar de que no ofrece una validación rigurosa.
