Abstract
1Alors qu'en Allemagne la mémoire collective fait de Leipzig un événement fondateur, la bataille demeure méconnue en France, où elle n'a pas marqué les esprits à l'égal de la Bérézina ou même de Waterloo.Elle a été peu étudiée par les historiens, même si ceux qui l'ont évoquée, Thiers par exemple, ont eu l'intuition de son caractère spécifique.C'est pourquoi Stéphane Calvet a voulu analyser sous un nouvel angle et de façon novatrice ce combat « titanesque » (p.15) qui lui paraît marquer l'entrée dans une nouvelle phase de la guerre, en utilisant pour ce faire les outils de la « nouvelle histoire bataille », à l'instar de John Keegan, et ceux de l'anthropologie historique dans la lignée de Natalie Petiteau.Les travaux de cet historien à propos de la Grande Armée sont connus des lecteurs et lectrices des AHRF, notamment par son article paru dans le numéro spécial n° 348 Guerre (s), Société (s), Mémoire, intitulé « La mort des anciens officiers de la Grande Armée à travers l'exemple charentais », et par le compte rendu que nous avons donné de sa thèse consacrée au destin de ces mêmes officiers tout au long du XIX e siècle, paru dans le n° 366.
