Abstract
L’histoire de Bellinde et Celion est celle des amours contrariees de deux jeunes gens, finalement reunis par celui qui eut pu les separer. Ses protagonistes rivalisent en vertu. Le geste d’Ergaste, renoncant au mariage par admiration pour la « belle et vertueuse amitie » des jeunes gens, se distingue neanmoins par sa magnanimite. Honore d’Urfe a ecrit un roman exposant « les divers effets de l’honnete amitie », ainsi que l’annonce le sous-titre de L’Astree . Quelle en est pourtant la nature ? On pourrait conclure de l’histoire etudiee que l’amitie la plus noble est celle d’Ergaste, souhaitant etre « recu comme frere » des amants. Nous proposons plutot de la lire en tenant compte du projet global du roman, lequel aspire a definir un lien decoulant d’une reelle affection entre personnes de sexe oppose et susceptible de conduire au mariage ; celui-la meme qui fait naitre l’admiration d’Ergaste. Aussi l’apparente indistinction de l’amour et de l’amitie, laissant croire a la possibilite de changer la passion en affection vertueuse, fait-elle place dans le recit a une apologie de la toute-puissance de l’amour.
