Abstract The selective vapour‐phase oxidation of 2‐MN to 2‐MNQ was investigated effectively in the presence of a composite vanadium catalyst. The catalyst was prepared by impregnation. It was characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, etc. The activity of the catalyst was tested in a fixed bed reactor by the selective oxidation of 2‐MN to 2‐MNQ, and the process conditions were optimized. The proper reaction temperature was 663 K, the space velocity was 200 mL · (g · min) −1 , and the material flow was 3 μL · min −1 . The 2‐MN conversion rate was 80.01 %, and the yield of 2‐MNQ was 45.84 %. Compared to previous procedures for this type of reaction, the reaction is more environmentally friendly and is suitable for large‐scale industrial production.
