Gosain, M.D. Review EditorFigureWhen a new book is added to the lengthy list of plastic surgery titles, it is an uphill battle to have it accepted as useful and enduring. I think the editors have achieved that with this title. This textbook is aimed at the trainee and young plastic surgeon, but it is extremely comprehensive and sufficiently detailed for any practitioner. The information is succinct, yet complete and up to date. There are more than 150 contributors, and the most striking thing about this book is that even though many of the usual big names appear in the contributor list, there are also many newcomers and relatively young contributors. This gives the whole book a fresh feel, and the standard of the chapters is consistently good. For a single-volume book, the detailed knowledge presented is impressive. For example, chapter 44, Genitourinary and Perineal Reconstruction, includes a segment on transgender surgery as well as hypospadias repair, something that, unfortunately, is lost to plastic surgery in the United States. It is also very up to date. Chapter 47, to highlight just one, discusses lymphedema and includes descriptions of conservative treatment as well as both excisional and physiologic operations, along with a discussion on indocyanine green lymphography and other diagnostic modalities. This is an emerging field in our specialty, and yet it is covered very comprehensively. The last section of the book interestingly contains chapters on military plastic surgery, simulation training, and plastic surgery fellowship and board examinations. The latter discusses the English F.R.C.S.(Plast.) Examination, the Australian F.R.A.C.S.(Plast.)/E.B.O.P.R.A.S. (the European Board), and the Canadian F.R.C.S.C. Unfortunately, the American board examinations are not discussed. Nevertheless, this is a useful chapter for trainees, providing tips for examination preparation as well as useful tips about the examinations themselves. This chapter will be very much appreciated by trainee plastic surgeons. The book comes with a dedicated website; the URL is given in the frontmatter of the book. This gives the reader access to all of the illustrations in the book in PowerPoint format. The images can be searched by chapter or resource. Since the list of resources includes only figures, both searches lead to the same page, so they are essentially the same. These images can be downloaded, however, which is a very useful feature for someone preparing rounds or a presentation. The Table of Contents can also be accessed from the web page. When I opened the link, I was excited as I was sure the titles of the chapter would be given, since the search of figures just refers to chapter numbers. Unfortunately, the Table of Contents does the same. This means that to access the figures for a particular chapter, one must know the chapter number to be accessed. This may be something that Wiley could fix easily, as it would make the web page a lot more user-friendly. The figures in the book are good, though some are a little small. However, packing so much information into a single volume likely necessitates this. The photographs are of variable quality, and I was surprised to see that even some of the photographs from the “big names” were not great. This is nitpicking, however, as the overall quality is very good. I think this is a great book. It is packed with good and up-to-date information, and I think it will be an invaluable resource for trainees but also for all plastic surgeons. The editors are to be congratulated on achieving a very difficult task with such success.
