L’analyse des données résultant d’une première approche tracéologique d’un échantillon de bâtons percés paléolithiques menée parallèlement à une série d’expérimentations, est présentée ici. Un apport d’informations d’ordre typologique et technologique complètera cette étude. L’observation des macro traces d’usures et des fractures de ces objets, pour lesquels pas moins d’une quarantaine d’hypothèses fonctionnelles ont été avancées, permet d’aborder directement la question de leur utilisation. Sur un échantillon archéologique composé de 130 bâtons percés provenant de 7 sites du grand Ouest de la France, l’analyse tracéologique a permis l’identification et la caractérisation de cinq types de stigmates présents exclusivement au niveau de la perforation qui laisse présager d’une plurifonctionnalité : le poli, l’écrasement, le broutage, le feuilletage et les micro stries. Parallèlement à ces observations, la mise en place d’un protocole expérimental selon diverses hypothèses fonctionnelles et tests d’usage sur différentes matières a permis la reproduction de certaines de ces traces. Mais les corrélations avec le matériel archéologique demeurent extrêmement fragiles. Du point de vue des modalités techno-économiques de débitage, on observe une exploitation raisonnée régie par la nécessité d’obtenir des objets à haute résistance mécanique : effectivement le débitage s’opère sur les parties proximales et distales des bois - andouillers et perche A. Les procédés utilisés sont multiples et souvent complémentaires avec tout de même une prédominance du tronçonnage par entaillage périphérique. Les résultats obtenus permettent de confirmer certaines données et d’apporter de nouveaux éléments contribuant à une meilleure connaissance des bâtons percés.
