Abstract
Pour que l'ergothérapie puisse atteindre sa mission visant à favoriser la réalisation d'occupations significatives pour tous, elle doit devenir une discipline plus engagée et responsable socialement et politiquement. Cet article soutient que la perspective individualiste dominante en ergothérapie est trop étroite pour atteindre ce but. Il préconise également l'intégration de la défense des intérêts à même l'identité de l'ergothérapie et présente les raisons pour lesquelles nous devons nous consacrer à la défense des intérêts aux échelons politique et public. Bien que le paradigme dominant et le climat politique posent des défis, il faut rétablir l'équilibre entre l'intervention auprès d'individus dont la vie occupationnelle a été interrompue et la remise en question des systèmes et structures qui empêchent ces mêmes individus d'aller de l'avant. L'adoption d'une approche sociopolitique plus large fait appel à une stratégie clé, soit la défense des intérêts. De toute évidence, la défense des intérêts est un impératif professionnel en ergothérapie. La défense des intérêts doit faire partie intégrante du processus de socialisation professionnelle. Un nouvel ensemble de compétences est requis dans nos programmes de formation et dans nos activités de développement professionnel; ces compétences doivent être accompagnées d'un sentiment d'idéalisme confiant.
