É fundamental reconhecer a importância da creche como um contexto educativo que constitui uma das primeiras experiências do bebé ou da criança pequena exterior ao seu círculo familiar. Sabendo que as experiências que decorrem ao longo dos três primeiros anos de vida têm um impacto significativo no desenvolvimento futuro das crianças e que os cuidados adequados durante esta fase trazem benefícios para toda a vida, importa salientar a creche como um contexto educativo que complementa a educação dos bebés e das crianças pequenas desenvolvida no seu seio familiar. Trabalhar em creche pressupõe a clarificação de finalidades educativas, de modo a perceber que objetivos educacionais devem ser atingidos, e a organização de um ambiente educativo a partir de uma rotina de cuidados e de uma gestão do espaço e do tempo que assegure o desenvolvimento dos princípios inicialmente definidos. Deste modo, cabe ao educador desenvolver um currículo que integre uma rotina de cuidados caraterizada por interações constantes e calorosas, atividades orientadas/livres, momentos de exploração do meio e relações próximas e colaborativas com os contextos familiares, satisfazendo as necessidades das crianças, proporcionando-lhes bem-estar e envolvendo-as em experiências de aprendizagem significativas para um desenvolvimento global e harmonioso.
