Abstract
Edward Shorter is well known for his robust writing style; provocative assertions and conclusions; and a penchant for undertaking sweeping studies in terms of both subject and era. Shorter has tackled the histories of the family in Europe; women’s bodies; depression; anti-anxiety drugs before Prozac; psychosomatic diseases; Western psychiatry; electroconvulsive shock therapy; and also flesh and desire, which embraced his notion of ‘total body sex’. Partnership for Excellence is a history of academic medicine at the University of Toronto (UoT). This undertaking might seem tame in comparison, but previously Shorter has published books about the history of radiology in Toronto and a former university-affiliated psychiatric hospital. Moreover, he has been a faculty member at that institution for almost 50 years, half of which as Hannah Professor of the History of Medicine. Partnership for Excellence is a big book. Indeed, the author himself asks rhetorically in the Introduction ‘Too long?’ Maybe—but any lesser (or less audacious) historian would probably be crushed under the weight of historical material that necessarily had to be collected, collated and sifted, for academic medicine at the UoT embraces one of the largest medical schools in North America, with no fewer than nine large, directly affiliated research and teaching hospitals, of which two are the biggest institutions of their kind in Canada as well as being top flight globally. (There are also another 19 community hospitals that have some form of affiliation.) To underscore the scope, breadth and depth of this project Shorter rightly emphasizes that he did not write a history of these hospitals or of the university per se; rather, he aspired to demonstrate the myriad interconnections between all these entities through their personnel, research achievements, clinical activities, and educational commitments. By correctly defining academic medicine as the sum of all these interacting components, Shorter’s book is novel.
